FPA Receives Grant to Expand Free Services

FPAGrantblog.png

We were devastated when the Supreme Court overturned Roe vs. Wade in June 2022, allowing states to ban or severely limit access to abortion. But California, as a Reproductive Freedom state, took immediate steps to protect the abortion rights and access that everyone rightfully deserves.

“California will not stand idly by as extremists roll back our basic constitutional rights; we’re going to fight like hell, making sure that all women – not just those in California – know that this state continues to recognize and protect their fundamental rights,” said Governor Newsom upon proposing a $125 million reproductive health care package.

Included in this revolutionary legislation was Assembly Bill 2134 (Weber), which promptly established the Uncompensated Care grant program within the Department of Health Care Access and Information (HCAI).

We are thrilled to share that FPA Women’s Health is a proud recipient of a grant.

About the Uncompensated Care Grant

The purpose of this grant program is to provide abortion and birth control services free of charge for income-eligible patients who would not be eligible to receive these services through Medi-Cal. Many of our patients currently have Medi-Cal or qualify for a temporary Medi-Cal program when they apply during their appointment. However, this grant provides a safety net for patients who don’t qualify for either of the current Medi-Cal options.

Traveling from out-of-state and worried that this California grant opportunity won’t apply for you?

Fortunately, this grant was designed with traveling patients in mind. There is no residency requirement for funding! Patients from any state can apply, which is another example of California stepping up for the benefit of sexual and reproductive health outcomes across the nation.

Not only do traveling patients receive the abortion services that they are unable to obtain in their home state, but they are able to leave their appointment with the birth control of their choice – including long-acting reversible contraception like IUDs and implants, which can provide peace of mind amidst the country’s uncertain legal climate.

If you need assistance getting to our clinics for grant-covered services, FPA Women’s Health is partnered with ACCESS Reproductive Justice to provide practical support like airfare, fuel, hotels, and childcare. The ACCESS Healthline can be reached on weekdays from 10am-4pm PST at (800) 376-4636.  Other helpful tips for travel, including airport and ride share information, can be found on our website.

We believe that every patient should have access to the care that allows them to take ownership of their health and wellness, regardless of their ability to pay. Most of our patients are seen completely free of cost, and we will do everything we can to ensure the same for you!  Make your appointment today.
